Mrs. Phloem Meets the Wolf!
“Mrs. Phloem!” Reddy Red ask during class. You don’t know anything about what we go through as kids. What happened 30 years ago does not apply today.”
“And why do you think this Reddy Red?” She replies.
“You don’t even have to deal with predators the same way we do today.”
“Oh Reddy Red. This is because you and the Bells don’t like to listen, and you go places you are not supposed to go. If you had a better understanding of the Food Chain, you would understand why this town is safe from our predators.”
“I understand the Food Chain Mrs. Phloem. Animals with teeth are predators and predators eat us! That’s it!
“This is not true Reddy. First of all, not all of our predators have teeth and not all animals with teeth are our predators. I can’t blame you for thinking this way because you kids have it so good now. I mean, how would you know it was bad in the past, if the present is all you know? I’m going to tell you the story about how we found peace on this land from our predators.”
Boom! boom! boom!
“When I was a little girl, I used to hear the sounds of footsteps and feel the shaking soil as predators walked above my home. Our predators the squirrel, would grab us out of the dirt thinking our family’s leafy hair above ground was asparagus. Or if there was a drought, meaning there was not enough water for all the organisms in the community. The squirrels would eat our leafy hair because of the amount of water that would be stored in our leaves.”
“As a child, my father always taught me about the food chain which is what saved this community. He taught me what I told you. Not all of our predators have teeth, and not all animals with teeth are our predators. Before I was ripe enough to leave home, I only saw pictures of our predators but never up close. When I first met a big animal, with big teeth, I too was frightened like you have been Reddy. I ran like the wind when I first saw a Wolf!
“But Mrs. Phloem, wolves don’t eat vegetables. Reddy Red says. “They’re carnivores, which means they only eat meat!”
“Very good Reddy!” Mrs. Phloem says with excitement. “Little did I know I was completely safe around the wolf, but this did not stop the wolf from making a game out of chasing me around in fear. When I finally got tired from running away. To my surprise, the wolf fell next to me, rolling around in laughter!
“Silly ginger root.” The wolf says laughing. “I don’t event eat vegetables, but the way you were running from me was priceless! You should have seen your face!”
As Phloem began to catch her breath, a thought came to her!”
“Hey Wolf!” She yell’s. “This town has been facing a problem with herbivores and omnivores. The herbivores like deer who only eat veggies are always just walking around in circles, eating veggies all day. Then omnivores like mice or fox will not only eat veggies, but they will also eat smaller or wounded wolves. If we work together, we can both live happy lives! You and your family of wolves can eat forever if you protect us from the herbivores and omnivores, and we’ll be safe. Doesn’t that sound like a great idea Wolf?”
“Phloem, I can’t argue with your idea. It would be a lot easier finding food if we use veggies as bait.”
“No Wolf! Phloem says firmly. “Protection is important for veggies to become better. Do we have a deal?”
‘’Sure we do Phloem. You know, you should become a teacher when you get older.”
“Mrs. Phloem, now you really are a teacher.” Reddy says. “I sure am, and I love what I do.”
